The most serious task in the name of Azerbaijani basketball was entrusted to local figures
According to the final decision of the federation management from December 6, 2023, a new coaching staff was appointed to our men's national team. Thus, the specialists who will make the main decision in our national team are not strangers to the Azerbaijani basketball community. Tahir Bakhshiyev and Anar Sariyev, who have served Azerbaijan basketball for many years as both players and coaches at national team and club level, will try to continue that service in our main team. Thus, Tahir Bakhshiyev, who currently works as the head coach of the "NTD-INDIGO" club, has been appointed as the head coach of the national team, and Anar Sariyev, the head coach of the "Neftchi" club, has been appointed as the first assistant coach. In addition, the Spanish specialist Alberto Blanco will be in the coaching staff of our national team. Alberto Blanco, who was the general manager and sports director of the "Caceres" club, whose last job was in the second league of Spain (LEB GOLD Spain), will work as the second assistant coach in our team. One of the main tasks of the 53-year-old specialist, who is familiar with European basketball, will be to deeply analyze the players of the opposing teams and prepare counterattacks against them together with our local coaches. It should be noted that the first test of our national team will be a game against the Swiss team on February 22 within the framework of the preliminary qualifying round of the 2027 World Championship to be held in Qatar

On the first matchday, Neftchi defeated Lankaran 86–54, while Guba secured a 105–98 away victory over Nakhchivan. On the second matchday, Sheki, playing in front of their home fans, beat Serhedchi 92–75. Meanwhile, Sumgait claimed a sensational away win, defeating NTD 116–94.
It should be noted that the quarterfinal matches — Sabah vs Guba, Absheron Lions vs Sheki, Ganja vs Neftchi and Ordu vs Sumgait — will be held at the Baku Sports Palace from February 18 to 22.
